What's the difference between the

WD5000KS from the 2nd generation: WD4000AAKS?

What are the variations, or benefits from the different generations? Thanks.
I know already the old generation is SATA150, while the new is SATA300, but is there any other differences?

According to HJReggel, the AAKS uses more dense platters and possibly perpendicular recording. This may mean fewer platters in some instances.

According to PCWorld I believe, the AAKS does not use perpendicular recording. That said, you are right on the denser platters.

ah i see..

Is there a disadvantage or problem associated with more platters?

this is speculation, but more error and heat??

More density = better. That's all.

Ok, well, more density means faster read/writes.
Less platters means less heat and noise.

KS uses 4 platters, AAKS uses 3 platters. I'm not 100% positive (but 99.3%), but with less platters, it will use less power. Can anyone else verify this?

In general, hard drive generations improve like this:

Bigger, faster, cheaper, cooler, quieter.

Some improve more in some areas than others.
