What's the best firmware for the WRT54G? (pay or free)

Best Buy is having a sale this week on their WRT54G and WRT54GS routers ($40 and $60 after rebates, respectively). So, I'm going to try to pickup a WRT54G v2.0 since from what I've read seems to best one to get. I did want to get the GS (for the extra ram), but I don't want any problems with World of Warcraft or timeouts when transferring large files (I've read about both issues on the WRT54GS)

So... I'm wondering which firmware is the best one to use. I don't need anything espicially advanced, but I'd really like to have it so that I could learn more about routers and have a lot to experiment with.

It seems like Sveasoft for $20 per year is the best way to go but please tell me what you think.

Well I just got back from Best Buy and all they had were v3.0 WRT54G's. So I bought one. (they did have -one- v2.2 WRT54G but I've heard thats a bad version). I was tempted to buy the WRT54GS v2.0 but I've heard bad things about them as well.

Will 3rd party firmware work with my WRT54G v3.0? Should I try to exchange it for another version?

Thank you for the link, but they don't say anything about the WRT54G v3.0...

Here is a good forum:

The software is GPL so its free, even if sveasoft wants money for it. They give you "support" for your money, and ban you if you re-distribute. They walk a fine line, but they started just a week ago er so with limiting firmware by mac address usage... There is talk of a GPL lawsuit going around now.

Might wana take a look at: http://slashdot.org/~TheIndividual/journal/
