I've been out of the hardware loop for awhile, but my work is decommissioning a whack of old production servers due to virtualization and upgrades. They are giving away to employees the old hardware, and I think I will grab one.

The servers are Dell PowerEdge 2950's

Two 3.0 Ghz Xeon C2D Processors
Two 72GB S.A.S. hard drives
A minimum of 8GB of memory
The PE2950 servers are a 9th generation server from Dell and fully support 64 bit operating systems

2u form factor not that it matters.. this will be at home. I was wondering what you would do at home with this hardware? I'll have to pick an OS of course,

Media server for the home? Depends on how many other HDDs you can add on...

If it's Xeon 5300 you could use it as en encoding server.
Depending on the number of HDDs supported it could be used as a NAS.
Upgrading your current main machine, I believe Xeons should OC well.

Other than that, I don't relly have any good ideas.

The 2U wont really matter. Just get a desk to put it on.

I vote web server. This is a perfect opportunity to pick some up and start creating/hosting websites for people.
