Hey, i'm looking to upgrade my system to the "lastest technology", and from what I hear that would be Athlon 64, I haven't been watching what's hot and what's not lately so i'm not sure what to purchase.

I am fine with overclocking, I may evan use WC.

What processor, and motherboard should I look into?
I would like PCI-E

Is there anything new coming out that I should wait for?

budget: i'm not exactly sure how much it is going to cost me so if my budget is too low please tell me, but i'll say ~$250, the CHEAPER the BETTER!

edit: I have 2x512MB Buffalo Tech (Winbond CH5) DDR400 which I would like to use, maybe upgrade that later.
 
Hey, is it evan worth it to change this from my Abit NF7-S rev2.0+AMD Athlon XP-Mobile 2600+ or should I just wait a while?
 
A budget of $250 just isn't going to cut it for a 64bit platform with PCI-E. If that's your budget at this moment, then I would say wait a while. Save up some more money and as time goes on, the technology will mature and hopefully prices will come down.

...just a quick $0.02... :)
 
well I wasn't exactly sure on what a low to medium A64 budget would be, I can do 300$ though
 
I haven't evan OCed it, I don't know why.. i'm lazy, I guess.
 
300$= a mobo and a decent processor for 64 bit. Just oc ur current rig, and wait a while.

Well 754 pin motherboard would not support PCI-E, which I really wan't.
 
The thing is, I have to purchase a new video card, which is probably going to be a 6600GT, so I figured I could purchase the PCI-E version since its cheaper with minimal speed improvements, and it's cheaper. With that I would need a PCI-E board so that's how I began thinking of A64.

Is it worth it to save $30~ and get the PCI-E version, sell my motherboard/cpu and get A64 motherboard/cpu? I know it's only $30~ but this way I won't be wasting $200~ on a video card which I will have to upgrade when I eventually go A64.
