What things do I need handy before I start assembling a new computer?

Hello All,

I am trying to build me a computer with the help of Hardforum. I have never done this before. Its an adventure for me. So, before I set out what are the things that I must have handy? for example, do i need screwdrivers, cellotapes, glue, amp-meter, voltmeter etc.? I may sound like a troll, but, before I use my tax return to do this, i am trying to get an idea from your experiences.

Also, where can I find a very through step by step guide in building a computer? Something like an illustrative guide.

Please respond...

Thanks,

Rex

Google should have some great guides

As for parts... Phillips screw driver (Magnetic helps but not needed), some sort of Pliers may come in handy but not essential. Yea all you really need need is a screwdriver.

If I think of anything else I'll let you know, but I built a system yesterday on my pool table in 30min from extra parts I had lying around and a screwdriver was all I needed.

Ohhh, you may want to get an ESD wriststrap to be extra safe. Most people like me just ground theirselves to the case, but a n00b can never be too safe ;)

I use one of those little claw tools to pick up small things like screws i drop into the case onto the motherboard.

read motherboard manual before you do anything. it will tell you everything you need to know

:p What is this, 1975?

You need a phillips screwdriver (preferably long and magnetic), and a static strap or mat is nice. That's it. With a few cases, you don't need the screwdriver even.

A multimeter would come in handy when you are soldering those components onto the mainboard and you want to check the resistance, the amount of voltage going through, &c.

Oh wait a minute...

the first time is a stressful time. especially if something fails. DO NOT USE A CRAPPY SCREWDRIVER!

I went to walmart and got this screwdriver:
- 6 bits different sizes, phillips and flat and star
-all magnetic
-dual-direction ratchet:
I can flip the switch and it will ratchet so the screw only tightens, or loosens, or acts normally

preparation is as much mental and organizational as it is tool-wise.

have a few containers around to hold screws and many other things. DO NOT THROW AWAY ANYTHING. keep a big box to hold all the boxes the stuff came in, save the manuals, and everything. it will pay off bigtime when you upgrade and sell old parts.

- A large, flat place to work so that you can spread everything out and see how things will fit before you start.
- A shallow dish or bowl to hold the screws / parts you'll be using.
- Good lighting
- Plenty of time; hurry your first build = someting < will > go wrong.
- Beer? Wild Turkey around B.B.S. labs.....:D

Good luck - take your time and enjoy the build.

Regards - B.B.S.

I am living on 3 laptops right now. All IBM Thinkpads. I have never owned a desktop. :S
I guess, to build my PC I need to buy a monitor, right? My intention is to plug it to my HDTV eventually.

Thanks,

Rex
