What should I get?

I have about a $50 budget and I need a new power supply, my old one went out.

I have a 8800GTS that needs to be powered so I'm looking for something in the 500W+ range.

Really have no idea which one would be the best option within' that price range.

Don't save money on PSU, I would def go with corsair hx520.. bit extra cash for solid psu that will last you..

Yea I don't either. It's for a friend though and he asked me to find him a good 500W power supply in the $50 range. His got struck by lightning couple days ago, so he is unable to get online.

I have a Corsair 620 unit on my desktop, but I generally just use my laptop.

I'm not even sure what all he will be powering, probably 2 hard drives, optical drive, 8800GTS, don't remember which CPU he had, one of the older C2D processors I think.

The PSU is the most important component.

The HX520/HX620 are great units (I've had both), but you pay EXTRA for the modular functionality. Corsair has non-modular units that are top-notch.

Would the Antec be a good make/brand to buy at $70 shipped?

Ok, I managed to talk a little more sense into him. Can a good 500W PSU be had for under $100?

The Antec is a good unit. If he can spend $100, get the Corsair HX520. Should be around $100 or less after rebate.

Ya, you can get a good 500w PSU for under $100. I personally buy Enermax, even though I can get the same quality for less cash from some other company. I use to have an Enermax 600w Noisetaker, but it died after serving me for 6 years. I overloaded it. 600w isn't enough to run a computer and 17 hdds. I also use an Enermax 500w Liberty in my gaming rig. No issues whatsoever.

Right now I'm sporting a pair of 550w Coolermaster PSUs in my server, a PC Power and Cooling 370w PSU for my Xbox 360, and a cheap 500w Aspire PSU in my lan box. Even though the Aspire only cost me $30, it's been rock solid for the past 4 years.

Find a used Corsair on these forums that someone will sell to ya... should be one somewhere

I ordered the HX520 for him.

Thanks for the suggestions.
