What refresh rate do I need?

I currently have some old Flat Screen Dell 17" Trinitron. THe problem is that I get those jaggies on the screen due to the refresh rate (60) at the resolution that I like (16x12). So I need to use VSync and it really screws up my performance, even though I have 6800 gt. I was wondering about what refresh rate should I be looking at to get rid of those jaggies and not have to use VSync at 16x12 or above?

That’s a lot of resolution for a 17” especially an older one. What you can do is call Dell and see if they have the specs. Baring that you could try to bump the refresh up one notch at a time until you get no display, then drop down to what works.

It would be rare, but some monitors can break if you go too high, so be warned. As a rule windows will revert back to the old setting if you don’t “OK” it, but not always. If you get a black screen for more then 10 or so seconds be ready to pull the plug and reboot in safe mode to get your settings back.

yeah, 60 is definately the highest for 16x12. I was just curious if I was interested in getting a new monitor what kind of refresh rate I should be looking for.

For CRT 85 and up is as a rule pretty good. For LCD they are all pretty much 60 with very few using 70.
 
1600x1200 on a 17" CRT?? :eek: Even on 19" CRTs, that resolution is too high for me. And I'm yet to see a 19" that can display 1600x1200 at 85Hz or higher without being blurry, let alone a 17" one.
