Can someone explain to me what vsync is? I never messed with this setting, but I keep hearing about it with regards to DOOM 3. If it helps, I'll be playing on a Dell 2001fp on a 6800 Ulta Extreme(when I find one).
 
vsync is when you force the program to match (synchronize) its vertical refresh rate with the actual refresh rate of your monitor.

This helps to prevent tearing and other graphical glitches but generally is not the case and is a performance hit.
