What is the red/black cable for on this video card (SPARKLE P980X+ GeForce 9800 GTX+)? and where does it connect on the motherboard?

Probably a S/PDIF line. No need to connect it unless you plan on using that card to send 5.1 audio over HDMI.

That port normally only sends a stereo signal over HDMI. At least the documentation for the last few video cards I've purchased with that port have only mentioned stereo.

I have the GTX 260 with the same spdif cable. I have a creative labs x-fi sound card. I'm not hooking my lcd screen up to cable or anything like that.

When do you need to use this cable? I have speakers hooked up to the creative sound card. In what situations is audio over HDMI needed?

My LCD screen has an HDMI connector chord that turns into DVI connection for my video card.

Has anyone been able to get that to work? I was never successful with it. Then again, I've been using Windows Vista and Windows 7 so I wouldn't be surprised if the drivers omitted the feature for those two OSs. I'm using Nvdia and Creative products and those two companies are notorious for dropping the cool features in drivers for new OSs and especially beta OSs.
