About one week ago I overclocked my P4 CPU my 10% using the jumperless configuration in the ASUS P4C800-E BIOS. Everything worked flawlessly; I ran my system through the most stressing tests I could, and I never once saw any visul artifact. The temperature went up about 3 degrees Celsius while idling, and about 5 degrees on a full load. I was thrilled. However, today while playing around with a demo for the Torque engine (Tribes 2 engine for anyway who doesn't know), I noticed some slight snow on distant geometry. Just when I though "Better shut down and take a peek to see what's going on" the game froze. I rebooted only to find that the computer would not boot at all, not even to the BIOS screen. I got scared and thought perhaps the heat inside the case had been too much. So I took everything apart and rebuilt it paying extra careful attention to cable placement. I was meticulous, taking four hours or so to make sure every cable was layed down perfectly so the air-flow inside the case would be as efficent as possible. I booted up, everything worked; I went into the BIOS, turned the Overclocking back to "Standard", exited while saving, and received the message "Overclocking failed". I tried again and it worked fine. I though I was safe. Now I haven't crashed again, but I have kept a close eye on temperatures, and they skyrocket whenever I load up a game. It idles at a normal 35 degrees Celsius, but while playing (and this is Tribes 2 remember) it jumps up to 60. I've begun to see artifacts in-game again as well. Normally on a full load it would hit 45 tops, and I never see snow or anything like that, until today. I have no idea what happened. It was a very sudden change from perfect to, well, not so perfect. Should I be looking into a new cooling solution here? I have the standard Intel fan and heatsink right now, with 5 small case fans taking care of the rest. I also have an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, which loves to give off lots of heat. Thank you very much guys (first post btw, great site).
