Let's say you get a new nice shiny piece of hardware to add to your current setup. It could be some new premium headphones or passive speakers. Whatever it is, what are the first songs that you play thru your setup in order test/enjoy your new equipment.

I would like to use this thread to maybe broaden my horizon on what I actually listen.

Personally, I throw in some Dream Theater, something 6.00 since I feel like I can hear the separation of the instruments pretty good. I also listen to some Papa Roach, Thriller and beat it by MJ, "usually back to back", in order to test the tight bass and some Manowar Gods of War album, just to get excited and pumped up. Later I'll run thru a chemical brothers or prodigy cd and the list goes on....
 
Wolfmother is complex and packed with sounds that benefit from good separation. An excellent test of your audio gear. Plus they fucking ROCK. Reminds me of Sabbath + other goodness.
 
Usually it's an SACD rip of Dark Side of the Moon (Breathe), something acoustic like the Garcia/Grisman/Rice "Pizza Tapes" version of House of the Rising Sun (have that in 24/88.2). Also another one I have been using recently is the song Discipline from NIN's The Slip (a free album that can be downloaded via various means, including in high resolution 24/96 format), it has a crazy low end sweep towards the end of the track.
 
Some earth shattering dubstep. Something like DJ /rupture's Uproot, some very deep/clean bass on that album, and it touches on many genres, Hip Hop, Dubstep, Reggae, etc... I highly recommend it.

Otherwise some drum and bass and other electronic stuff. Pendulum, The Prodigy, Crystal Method, etc...
 
I listen to a few tracks off Dark Side of the Moon SACD and then I usually go for Adele and from there to Radiohead for Backdrifts and I will. Finally I just go and listen to specifically what I feel like listening to and explore how it sounds different from what I am used to.

I usually do stuff I am very familiar with, Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath and Master of Reality. Rush's Caress Of Steel and Hemispheres.

Nine Inch Nails: The downward spiral- March of the pigs ( dosent hit hard, and its highs are a little soft, but it plays really hard and it a good test on speakers, if they can keep up with that song and its subjective distortion, you have a good set of speakers)
Street Sweepers: NINJA sampler- Clap for the kittens (funky wobbly bass line- likes to shake shit up)

and last but not least pandora station: bassnector... dub step ohhh yeah
 
That reminds me that the Pot from Tool is also a great review song.
 
The Wall. Sounds perfect on my AV40s, not to mention ATH-M50s.
 
I would go straight to Living Legends Never Falling Down then end it with some Metallica One and To Live is to Die.
 
Dead Can Dance remasters. Fields of the Nephilim. Pink Floyd. anything with Herbert von Karajan and the BPO. Led Zeppelin. Nine Inch Nails.

Basically, just a few songs that I'm really familiar with.
 
Kromestar: Konflict. If the audio setup goes silent and sputters out when there should be a smooth and groovy flow of bass, then the audio system is not giving me the low frequencies I want to hear and feel.

Sarah Brightman: Harem. If everything on this album sounds crisp, airy and clear, then I like it. If things get scratchy, hissy, sharp or distorted, then that's no good.

Lykathea Aflame: Bringer of Elvenfris Flame. If the drums are fast and distinct, then I approve. If the sound system isnt fast enough to keep each drum hit distinct and everything else clear and non-muddled at the same time, then that's no good.

Between these three songs I get a good feel of whether or not I like a new set of speakers/headphones.
 
For me I listen to whatever I am in the mood at the time. A good sound system would play most any type of music well. It can range from Enya to Deadmau5, Eminem to Mozart, Dire Straits to Nobuo Uematsu (composer for Final Fantasy themes).

The people on this forum helped me put together a system that makes me enjoy most anything I play on it. :D

Currently I am enjoying a piece by a fellow forum poster on another forum. Really nice work if you like Trance style music.
