Ok, so i talked to my dad about buying a new ps instead of using the stock psu that came with my case (Aspire X-Dreamer 2) and he said he wanted to see how long it lasted and if it would die.......... What can i do? I've ran out of ideas. I've been trying to push for an antec, and he just says no, i don't believe those people who say their computers died so severely........ HELP ME

Is your dad a comp tech guy? if so this might be hard. if not...

Convince him that without a good PSU, there is a damn good enough risk your computer componets will get damaged and/or fried. "So dad, you want to replace my computer when my PSU dies and might take the rest of my system with it?"

Also, think of it as putting the fuel into the sports car: now why would anyone use low-grade fuel on a good sports car (ie Mustang, RX-8, Lotus, etc etc)? A good power supply is basically ensure that your system gets clean power into the system. I think thats a good analogy for it.

Post your specs man. We'll try to find a good PSU within a good price range. I'm sure the trick is convincing him and finding a low enough priced, yet still quality PSU.

Why not just use that PSU..if it works..it works. I used a Raidmax 420W PSU that came with my RaidMax case I got for $40 for about two years to power 3x HDDs, 6800GT AGP, Burner, and a 3.2Ghz Northwood and etc (Wireless card, TV Tuner, Soundcard.) etc. Never had any problems....

Is your PSU stable under full load?

yeah, i was like, dad, i wouldn't waste 800 dollars of parts just because of a crappy PSU. my friend burned his computer horribly, lost everything with a crappy PSU. my dad didn't take any of it, instead, he told me to keep running this PSU till it fries something......... He doesn't trust anything.... i swear, he just doesn't want to get another PSU... He also said what would i need another PSU for if i already had a "working one." what can i do?

by the way, my comp specs are...
Pentium 4 630 3.0Ghz /w HT 800FSB (Prescott)
ASUS P5LD2
1 stick 512MB DDR2 533 PC2 4300
MSI X800 normal
1 Lite-on Cd/dvd combo drive
1 Seagate 160GB SATA Hdd
1 Seagate 200GB UATA Hdd

Another thing... i found out today, my PSU is a piece of sh*t. here's why... i've got supposedly a 420W, but i can only run one of my hdds at one time. I dualed them together, and here's what i got. when plugged both of them up, my OS on my 160 won't load up at all, it sits there and hangs with a black screen. i don't see a glimpse of any kind of OS....... it just can't even handle 2 hdds.

Well, you can't really convince someone of something if they openly deny reality. If he refuses to accept that shitty PSU's aren't good, then there's little to be done. Maybe you could dig up some old horror stories on this forum about people's computers being gobbled up by the cheap ass PSU monster.

LGA775... that means the included PSU doesn't even meet required specification by the motherboard.

Ask him if he's going to buy you all new parts if this one happens to go and take everything with it.

yea, i'll ask him that. Thanks for the help guys.

anyway, i'm lookin at powersupplies just in case he changes his mind or once i pick up some $$... (hopefully that won't be after my computer dies). If you guys could look it over for me, especially maybe the people who have owned these before, it would be a great help :)

Rosewill RE502-BLK 500W Aluminum - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817182002

Antec TruePower 2 430W - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103928

Allied AL-400ATX 400W - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817154013

I've only found these three that look pretty good. If you guys have an suggestions for other good PSUs or any comments for any of these powersupplies, it would be greatly appreciated.

The Rosewill and Allied are best emplyed as door stops. Get the Antec.

I have the 1.0 Version of that Antec, for lack of a better description. It's a great power supply that I recommend. I found, however, that I needed the 550Watt PSU. My trucontrol 2.0 has served me quite well.

That's amazing how you conclude that's a power supply problem. I feel like sending you a power supply for free just to prove you wrong.

In fact.... PM me your name/address. You're breaking my freakin' heart here.

Hmm..... I'm not too sure what it could be then.......... if it's not a power thing. So i did a little bit more looking around and I found that after like 3 minutes of a black screen (with everything plugged up), my 160GB with the Xp showed hte loading screen. Then, it sat there loading for a long long long time. I've checked my jumper configs and everything is fine. Do you have any suggestions?

just to confirm your jumper settings go ahead and leave your boot drive hooked up and only plug the PSU into your second drive. no ide cable just power. that way both drives powered up yet only 1 booting. to see if its power or other settings.
and as PSU's dont cost that much for a decent one maybe spend your allowance or something on getting a new one?

ok, so i tried the suggestion. jonnyGURU, i guess you were right. What could be causing the problem? Why would my computer lag so horribly with that second hard drive IDE connected?

well if you really want to convince him to get a new powersupply...overclock your cpu and video card and then make your dad scrape the melted pcb's off the carpet.

It may take an hour or two for the psu to catch fire.

Thatll show em...

Well, I guess i'll save up for the Powersupply myself, but first, i want this second hard drive setup correctly. You guys have any suggestions as to why when my second hard drive is connected to everything, it causes my computer to lag? by the way, my second hard drive (200GB) has nothing on it.

I killed an eVGA 6800gt with a cheap psu (and possibly a motherboard as well) with an off-brand 450w PSU. It took about a year but it finally crapped out. I was a PSU noob then, I'm not as noobish now I use an Antec SmartPower 2.0 for my current rig.

uhm... i know this sounds n00bish, but i want this hard drive working. It's a real stalemate right now with my dad about this, so i'm gonna have to save up for myself. I'm probably going to go for that Antec True power 2.0 430W, pretty good price (about 68 at local place) and has some real good reviews. But, do any of you know what the hardware conflict might be when it lags my other hard drive when loading up?
