friend just handed me a used MSI NEO2 to use.

needing to build a new system from my old 1.7ghz. i need a cpu,cpu fan, ram,videocard

and a power supply.

i have about $500. what do you recommend? i havent upgraded in a while so i really do not

know any new stuff. thanx guys
 
I'd start with a 6600GT for the video card. Next I'd pick up 1GB of memory. That leaves you with enough to pick up the 3.0GHz retail P4 and hit your target price.
 
Don't skimp on your PSU. You may end up getting into a big trouble. You've got to grant yourself a little bigger budget say $100 more then you will get a very decent setup.
