What display should I get?

I've been using cheap LCD HDTVs as monitors for a while. I had an Olevia 437V (37" 720p) for a couple years, and just recently picked up a Proscan 40LC45S (40" 1080p) from Best Buy.

I was hoping to up my resolution a bit to give my i7/GTX285 a little more to do. However, I found out (shortly after buying, despite all my pre-sale research) that it doesn't seem to want to run at 1920x1080 from a PC, via either VGA or HDMI. That's not too bad, as I just bought a house and will therefore probably be using my TV as a *gasp* TV in the near future.

So now I'm looking to return to the land of "normal users" who don't have huge screens with low resolutions. I bit on the G2410 for $140 the other day just because it was so cheap, but Dell cancelled the order. I'm now looking at the 2209WA for $201, the Asus 24" for $180, or something else.

I'm mainly looking for size, as I'm used to the 37"/40" TVs. I'm only running 1360x768, but my friend's 21-22" widescreen (sorry, I don't remember the exact details) just seems so tiny for WoW. However, my 2007WFPb at work seems just fine, I think mostly because I'm doing work on it rather than comparing it to WoW on my huge TV. I'm now used to running with all my settings maxed out for pretty much any game I play, and using the huge screen. Because of that, I'm leaning toward a bigger screen over a higher res. The bigger screen will be less of a shock stepping down from the TV, while the lower res should mean I can use slightly higher settings.

I like the 22" UltraSharp, but I'm wondering about the 1680x1050 resolution and the IPS panel for gaming. I'm used to the 5ms TVs, so it seems like the IPS should be equal there, but with better color. Is 1680x1050 generally supported in most games? I mostly play WoW, though I've been playing a number of other games now that I upgraded my system - Crysis, FC2, SC:CT (woot had it cheap the other day), and I've got WiC around here too.

Should I be looking at the Asus VW246H for the 2ms GTG since the PC is primarily for entertainment? This could end up doubling as a bedroom monitor, so the HDMI and full 1080p on the Asus 24's are nice too. Is the 2ms worth the $35 upgrade from the 5ms VH242H? I don't have much to compare it to, but I believe that I might be seeing some ghosting currently - screen changes don't always seem fluid, and are a bit distracting.

I probably won't be really needing the monitor for another month yet. I'd love to get something that supports 120Hz input, but I don't want to pay a ton for one good number on an otherwise crappy panel. Anything else coming out in the next few weeks that I should be aware of? The Asus VG242H caught my eye as well, but I'm sure that it'll take forever to come out if I sit around waiting for it.

What are your thoughts?

1650 x 1050 is very common since 22" monitors are very popular.

As an owner of the Asus VK246H (same as the VW246H, but with webcam), it is definitely a gaming monitor. As it has almost 0 input lag, based on Prad.de review (link below), about 95% of screenshot tests shows 0 input lag, while about 5% peaked at around 30ms. I've only played Fallout 3 on it for a total of around 10 hours back in December, and I do not recall seeing any ghosting. The Asus VK246H is basically used to monitor processes on my HTPC (which also serves as a backup PC). Ultimately, you will eventually notice ghosting sometimes 'cause it is due to the limitation of LCD technology.

It does a decent job at video / movies. I've noticed some visual artifacts here and there especially in The Dark Knight. However, most people should not notice most of the artifacts that I saw.

My review @ Tomshardware:

I game on my 26" NEC 2690WUXi (H-IPS panel, 32ms lag) and also my newly purchased 26" Planar PX2611w (H-IPS panel, less than 8ms lag according to user reviews).

Have you considered the new F2380?

What's the difference on that one? IPS? The listed numbers are all the same as the 2333SW, but it costs twice as much. That site lists the F2380 as 160°/160° while a different review lists it as 178°/178°. Newegg lists the 2333SW as 170°/160°.

Ah, a little more Googling shows that the F2380 is PVA.
