Thinkin about gettin a new cpu and i plan on over clocking it. I got an Abit IC7 Max3 board and a P4 2.6C running at 3.2. Anyways i'm thinkin aobut just gettin a new cpu for myself and was wondering what would be the best one to get that fits my board?? I've been out of the cpu loop for some time now so i'm not sure what is the best. Anyways, the cpu must be a good overclocker and run on my board. BTW i water cool, if that makes a diff or not. Thanks
 
Well the only place you can go from here would be to the 3.4ghz prescott or the 3.2 Extreme Edition. If you are looking for a big boost from where you are. ;)
 
I just replaced my 2.4c @ 3.2ghz with an E0 stepping 3.2e and overclocked it to 4ghz the minute I installed it in my system. I've been happy with it at this speed so I haven't tried to make it go higher yet.
 
I suggest doing what thumper2002 did and try finding a prescott that runs at 4+ghz.
 
so are all 3.2 prescotts?? i heard they run really hot, is this true?? thumper2002, what did u have to bump the vcore up to, to get it to 4Ghz??

I got a 640, no it doesn't run that hot i guess, mine is on 37-41 degrees in idle and 50-55 on load with stock cooler.

Northwood 3.2/800/512. Nice & cool running, most I've seen will do at least 3.7ish at stock to very slight overvolt (1.575 or so) with good cooling/psu/stable mobo. I'll honestly say that 4.2+ is plausible on a Precott-based 'E' CPU, but those socket 478 Prescotts are known for running a good hotter (~10C+ diff) than Northwoods, and a good bit hotter than their LGA775 counterparts as well. I would have gotten a Pressy 3.2 or 3.4 (you can change the multiplier downward on our boards with these cpus, woohoo!) but did not want the larger heat output and additional strain on the mobo's mosfets. Other than lacking SSE3 the Northwoods generally tend to outgame the Pressy at similiar clockspeeds and many benchmarks.

I have a 2.4c that will do 3.4+ and the 3.2 will eat it alive at most any speed, I also seem to recall reading somewhere that at least SOME of the 3.2 Northwoods seem to have as much as 6 clocks less latency than the 2.4c. My best Everest latency with the 2.4c is mid-63ns while the 3.2 is consistently mid-59ns or less. Not a huge difference but there nonetheless and makes me think the idea possible.
 
I had to bump the vcore up to 1.5 volts. But I believe that it's because these asus boards are notorious for undervolting under load. Mine undervolts almost .1 volts under load according to MBM 5. I get idle temps of 39-40c and under load i believe it gets around 46-47c. If you're gonna buy a 3.2e prescott.... my stepping listed on the box was SL7PN which is an E0 stepping.
 
boyz i looked through intels web page and i can't find the spec sheet and tells you what stepping your cpu. Can some one point me in the right direction. I'm really leaning towards the 3.2E Prescott
 
I just overclocked my 3.2 to 3.6 and left the voltage at stock. Perfectly stable. I think on water and higher voltage it would probably go to 4ghz.
