I have an athlon 2000+ and it gets very hot, a while ago it was at 65 degrees C where the motherboard temp was at 40 C.

My pc tower is in a computer desk.... my pc tower looks like this >>> http://www.anglianinternet.co.uk/acatalog/belmore.jpg yes very ugly i know. It has ventilation holes on the sides and the exhast fan i think its called blows out at the back.

The thing is my desk is blocking the ventilation holes is there anything i can do? when i put the tower on the floor it gets to around 50 C which is fine but inside the desk its 65 peak.

Yeah the simple answer is to put it on the floor but i got a 1 year old sister running around the house and the pc is in the living room where she spends most of the time. Also it could get knocked when people walk pass and this is the only room in the house I can have the pc.

Would drilling holes at the side of the desk help? and taking the back panel of the desk off help?
 
If the PC is enclosed inside the desk then remove the back panel so that air can get out of there. You may also want to try drilling some holes towards the bottom front of desk to allow some fresh air in. If this doesnt help you may need to add more fans to the case to get more air flowing through the case itself. The idea is to get cool air in and hot air out. Sounds like your PC is just recidulating the hot air it just expeled and is only getting hotter.

got a radeon 9800 pro so that has a fan on it

300watt powersupply has a fan on it

and as far as i know thats all the fans i have........ ive looked inside my pc and i dont see where more fans can go but i dont know anything about pc hardware as in fitting it, i cant even fit a fan dont know how to!

Is this enough fans?

I am going to be cutting a hole in the back of the desk.
 
As bad as it sounds getting some ventilation holes in your desk and getting some airflow moving is probably the easiest solution. Probably by taking out the back panel of your desk would help out... Alos, how are your case fans arranged? Is there exhaust/intake fans on the front and back, or fans on the side?
 
Well the I got fans on my gfx card and power supply.

The back fan (exhast) is blowing air out and the only other fan i have is the cpu fan which is also blowing out but inside the case.

Thats the only fans I have in their, I really dont know where fans go........ i dont see any space but then again i dont even know how to fit a fan.

How much spare room have you got around the lowest pci slots.
I have helped the cooling of a comp by takeing all the spare pci slot covers off.
Then makeing a "L" shaped bracket for an 80mm fan so that it pulled air in through the open slots.
If you take the back of the cabinet off then doing that may help to pull cold air in the bottom and push hot air out the top.

also... if you dont mind haveing a wire or 2 hangeing out of the pc... it would help to put a hole in the desk itself and mount a fan there.... if your desk is like my old one... the place where you stick the pc is raised slightly off the ground, drill a 3" hole straight down and mount a fan there... you wont see the hole form the bottom, like you would if you drilled in the sides... and with little ones around they wont be able to get at it unless the door is open (in witch case you put a fan gaurd on the inside (i know _liitel_ babys may still be able to fit there fingers in there... so watch em)

if your desk isnt raised off the ground, then cut the hole on the inside of the desk (near your leg) and at the top (right under the work surface) (i know... heat rises... but.. in this case its for looks while still being functional) the work surface will help to hide the hole and will put it up out of reach for littel kids... unless they are 3... in witch case let them stick there finger in there once... they wont do it again :O ;)

yeah i will modify my desk later and see what it does.

Here in the UK its been getting extremely hot (for this country anyway) temps up to 30 C and my pc is now roasting.... So i decided to put the pc tower on the floor so its got plenty of space for the hot air to escape and even on the floor my cpu is getting temps of up to 66 C and motherboard up to 45 C now I know this is crazy.

My BIOS, Sandra and speedfan (program) says I have no chassis fan and no power fan..... what does this mean? and where do these fans go? Read above as ive explained exactly what fans I have in my system.

Ive even took the side panel off my tower and its still gets to around 60 C please help!
 
Those programs show the RPM the fan is running at IF they have a speed monitoring cable on them. The fact that they are showing 0 doesn't nescessarily mean that there are no fans plugged in. Have a look at the bottom of the case at the front to see if there are 4 mounting holes for a fan. If so measure the distance between the holes to find which size of fan you will need. Most likely the size wont be spot on fan sizes 80mm, 90mm, 120mm but pick a fan that is nearest and greater than the size you have measured (the fan size measures the diameter of the fan blades, not the holes). You should check out some of Case Modding 101's in the articles section of the big [H]. Nice to see more UK OCP'ers. Just tring to soak up some of the rare sunshine we get here :cool:

This is my pc case on that link, take a look at all the pictures, how many fans could I have?

Also i only have a 300w power supply, do i need a higher watt one? I run an agp gfx card, pci sound card, 2 hard drives, cpu and fan, exhast fan at the back and 2 usb ports at the front. This is all the power i use i think is it enough?
 
Looks to me like thats an 80mm fan hole in the front. Have you got one in the hole at the back? PSU should be fine, but if youn have the cash get a bigger one, its a bit on the small side considering your GFX and CPU.

Yeah i call it the exhast fan that one, is that the correct name?

Lets say for argument sake i buy a 560watt PSU, would my pc use all the power it needs from the PSU and leave the rest alone? Oh would my pc overload due to too much power?

I have 2 usb ports at the front, if i put this fan at the front, will i still beable to use the usb ports?

By putting in a larger Power supply you wouldn't be overloading anything. If the cpu is set to take 1.5V, thats all its gonna take, it won't take more unless you set it to take more, it might take a little less if your power supply is a little low, but it won't overload anything.

Only get a new PSU if you find that something is underpowered. Seeing how your motherboard supports the temperature display feature, it probably supports the same thing for power, so the ASUS site might have some kind of utility to few the power, but I don't really think you need to worry about the Power supply at all.

As for the fans, I would recommend cutting a hole into the back of your desk to allow air to get out.

Is the front of your case blocked by anything? If not, see if you have any room to place a Fan in the front below your hard drives. This will allow air to come in, and get out, so you'll have an air current right through the case, that should help quite a bit for heat removal out of the case.

If that doesn't work, you could get a new case Fan that really has some power behind it. If its in a desk then sound won't be as much of a problem, and you might be able to get away with using a Vantec Tornado Case fan, those things move air, but they are pretty loud.

As for using the USB ports, take a look inside and see where the wiring is, if there is no conflict in the wiring, You should still be able to use the USB ports. It would be kinda a pain in the a$$ if you had to reach into the back for the USB with it in a desk.

Hmm.. Until you put a new psu in, up for making the [H] Blokes some breakfast on the top of the case? Fried eggs, and bacon with As5. mmm.
