What are the chances that data could be lost if for some reason the power to a computer was severed?
 
the chance is actually very little, but it is possible. It depends on what the computer was doing when the power was saved. If you were working on a document and haven't saved, and it doesn't auto-save, than it's gone. There is a small chance that the hard drive will be damaged, but very little, modern drives have failsafe mechanisms in the event of a power outage. Do be careful when the power comes on, though. If you're not hooked into a surge protector and the computer comes right back on when the power comes back on, then you could blow things inside the computer.
