Well here's the deal, I'm having problems with my Radeon 9800xt (I'm assuming). I'm running a AMD3800+ Liquid cooled, 1024mb corsair xmspro, on an Asus A8v board... I do a fresh install of windows (XP home/pro) and everything goes fine until I start messing with my video card. I install Castalyst 4.9 and my display freezes up... (The mouse only moves right-left and the desktop is kind of scrambled. From then on (after I install the driver) my comp will only boot windows if I set the AGP bus speed to 4x. Even at 4x, if I install any of the newer ATi drivers (i.e. 5.6 /w control center) it does the same thing. Any ideas?? Please help me!! I'm going to upgrade to a dual 6800gt SLI system or at least an X800/850XT, but until then I would like to be able to run HL2 and FarCry @1200x1600 without being choppy...

When installing the newer drivers did you use Driver Cleaner to clean the old drivers out of the system? IF not use it and READ the instructions as they are important for it to work right.

No, I just uninstalled the older Catalyst version... I'll try that, but that still doesn't explain why it locks up at 8x agp on a fresh install of windows and the older driver... Basically, my only 2 options are running my machine without the catalyst (windows just detects the card and uses a standard generic driver) which sucks because I don't get the full potential.. Or I can run it at 4x AGP /w catalyst 4.9 (Doom3 Hotfix)... My brother has a 9800 Pro and he says any of the newer drivers (any that include the new control center) screw up his machine.. He has to use older versions. Catalyst is pretty much universal though right?? Whether you're using a mobility 9200, a Asus 9600xt, or an X800???

Have you tried using the Control Panel version of the drivers? Try Driver Cleaner then try the Control Panel version.

As for the AGP issue maybe you need to update your chipset drivers.
