I have 100Mb wired and 54Mb wireless. Without a doubt, wired is much faster than wireless for me. Even though the wireless is 1/2 as fast, it performs 1/4 to 1/5 as slow when transferring large files.
One thing to note, if the people with slow wired made cables themselves, they probably didn't do it correctly. If you wire 1-1 then you are not using twisted pairs for your transmit and receive... which really kills your speed.
I have run into this situations many times are work. Sucks to see people so proud of themselves for making their cables... only to have to shoot them down.
