Weirdest thing ever

Alright, I ran Prime95 for an hour with no errors. I did have it running overnight but my power went out for a bit so I didn't get to see the results. Wouldn't it have showed an error within the first hour at least?

EDIT: Ran it for 2 hours with no errors.

I'm going to run Prime95 while I sleep tonight to see what's going on. But so far there have been no errors in Prime95 or Memtest86, and my loadtimes are much much better than on my old computer. Do you guys think I should RMA this stuff? I really don't want to go through the hassle if this isn't going to solve my problems but is that what you guys think I should do?

I've found the solution! Apparently, AMD 64s coupled with SP2 and the latest nvidia drivers have problems with Unreal Engine 2.0 based games. That's why UT was about the only game I've had problems with. As for Vampire the Masquerade, I'm just going to chalk that one up to the gaming being buggy as hell to begin with.

The solution can be found here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=36541

The only thing I'm worried about is this change. What exactly is DEP and how is this affecting my system?

DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is designed to prevent buffer-overflow program execution - which is what alot of virus' used to take advantage of. The newer Athlon64's and Pentium IV's (so I'm told) have this added feature (NX instruction) which basically tells the computer to stop executing certain program code if a buffer-overflow is detected.

And this just goes to show why consoles are so popular. You won't get a blue-screen on a console. And what 9-year old kid is really going to spend the time figuring out this problem? Apologies in advance for all the 9-year old's that are reading this and telling me how wrong I am.

Well I would definitely say that consoles are a much better choice for a 9 year old kid, but there's a certain satisfaction to be had when you build a kickass gaming rig yourself or squash a bug that's been a thorn in your side for a while. Personally, I prefer PC games, and while there may be a little more work involved, the rewards are more than worth it.

There's a config file hack for UT than will cause it to use opengl instead of directx. I would try that and see if it fixes your problemAt least then you know for sure what the problem is.

hmmm... from what i understand, main difference between the 2 games is directx.

apparently, hl2 is all opengl- no directx whatsoever. not sure of the differences, or even wtf opengl is, but it certainly works.

ut2k4 is going to go with the somewhat easier and more widespread use of directx. directx 9.0 i believe.

i have no idea how (if) this could be related to the problems... but i thought it would be good to throw it out there.
