Weirdest POST ever.

So, yesterday, I installed a USB 2.0 CompactFlash Card Reader. I plugged it in while the computer was on, rebooted later, everything was working fine. today, i turn on my computer in the morning, and this is as far as my boot goes. I get a beep, the HDD led goes on, then off.

I restart, cycle the power about 10 times, reboot about 10 times, nothing. sometimes it gets to "Int", sometimes it only gets to "In" and one time it got to "In" and the top half of the "t". Figuring what the hell, i unplug my USB card reader and scanner, and voila, it boots up. It still hesitates at the "Intel" but then it keeps going.

Then it says "CPU Is unworkable or has changed, please verify CPU SOFT MENU" so i go to the BIOS, check it out in the bios, save changes, and everthingworks fine. I've plugged the reader and the scanner back in, and it's working fine. Is this a power issue? Should i get a Powered USB hub?

what size is your PSU? you could be right in that it's a power issue, but i've never used a compactflash card reader, so i don't know much about them.

I think my PSU is 400w... It's an antec, good quality one. Card readers are little tiny things that seem like they should draw about 0 power. Even before i got the card reader, i noticed the slight hesitation on the "t" of intel, maybe half a second, but it always kept going.

I get this the first couple of reboots after clearing my CMOS, but after that, it goes away.

no overclocking, and yes, i have gotten the CPU thing before... seems like they might be related though.

Went through the same thing exactly on a EPOX board. Anytime a 6in1 USB card reader was plugged in it would halt/freeze on bootup.

After a long exchange of E-mails with EPOX I finally got ahold of a beta BIOS that fixed the problem. Wish I had more info but it is not a one of a kind problem.


Try tech support of the mobo manufacturer, it might be an easy fix that they know about.

If you don't have the latest BIOS for your board, try updating it.

Hey, that's the same kind of POST I had on my IC7-G, except the CPU didn't show up. Turns out CPU was a goner.

I did not do that, I could of saved buch of them.

my system locks up on boot exactly like that if i have a cd in my liteon burner. wierd huh?

I've seen this a few times with hot CPU's... like when you clock them and they get really REALLY hot... like almost to hot to touch...

it could be a heat related problem with the cpu fan... or you might had fried your cpu, or it arrived damaged.

no, the CPU is fine... it's been working perfectly since i got it, working perfectly now.

motherboard damaged... memory damaged... agp card not well sited on slot...

did you happen to think there might be a grounding problem or something else with your new devices? take the card reader back and try another one. a 400W antec, unless you are running your computer in a sweltering chicken coup SHOULD be fine for that card reader and a fair share of other stuff.

It also could be something is taking a drag on initial start up. I would suggest seeing if you set a 5 sec. hard drive startup delay and see if the problem fixes itself.

from what i hear over at the ABIT Forums, this is just a problem that the Abit IS7 and IC7 have with CF Card Readers. All I do is unplug the reader for boot, and the system runs like a dream. Who knows.
