weirdest computer problem i have ever had

i just got back from a lan. when i started up my computer i got some weird error at the post screen saying one of my ide drives wasn't working. i unplugged everything and just put them back in, and when i restarted within 5 seconds this HUGE cloud of smoke just started coming out of one of the drives. (mind you my computer was cool and all too because i had just got home). so i turned off my computer disconnected that hdd and restarted. it booted fine and is working normally, no damage done.

does any one know what could have casued this, because it has been working fine for a long time now?
 
You let out the magic smoke...that's no good.


In all seriousness, could have been bumped wrong, condensation if it got cold out in the car and was moved inside and not warmed up enough. Lots of things can go wrong.
 
As Defacto said, once you let the smoke out, that's a bad thing.

I'd be backing up asap right about now.
 
luckily that hdd was used to back stuff up on.. i don't think i'm going to try to put it back in though, for the saftey of the rest of my computer

thats probably a good idea :)
but you may want to pick up another backup drive...or, what i do...rotate the old drive to backup duty and buy a new main drive :)
 
You might be able to salvage the drive if you replace the PCB with one from another drive that matches exactly.
 
Have fun with your new set of magnets and your mirror finish coasters/frisbees.
 
maybe a coach roache laid eggs in the brether hole on the top of the drive and when they hatched the climbed onto the pcb and FRIED...
 
That is odd how it would do that then work fine. But If I had the money I'd do as you said and get a raptor and put your current drive as backup/storage.

well i haven't tried the drive..i was just saying that my computer worked fine when i unplugged that drive

LOL...i did that once, on a an 8 gig drive that i lost all my financial stuff on that i had kept up for a year....of course...i used a 12 guage slug....let me tell you....that works better :)
