Symptoms:
- Downloading large files has a good chance of being corrupt. Like an installer will probably have some error unpacking itself. Downloading rar files and extracting will often have CRC errors in a few of them.
- Firefox will crash often at random times and come up with a window to send a report to mozilla. They don't have any clear culprit. Here's one http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/7e4a75f2-a047-4ca3-9ce8-f02762091222
- Random background processes will crash like Windows Defender, COM Surrogate, User Profile Service, Cryptographic Services, Host Process for Windows Tasks, etc. They come up with a window saying "Blahblah has stopped working, send info to microsoft, click here to to find a solution".
Tests:
I ran a memtest on all 4 of my 1GB RAM sticks individually, as well as in a few random configurations like 2 of them in slot 1 and 2, or slot 1 and 3, or all 4 at once, but they all passed. I would wake up and start memtest, then 8 hours later I would come home and it was still going with no errors. I did this for about a week.
I ran an error scan on my hard drive in windows and using HD Tuner. The windows scan looked like it found some stuff, but didn't report any errors when it booted back into windows. HD Tuner didn't find anything.
I'm thinking it's a bad network card. Like maybe it gets a few bytes wrong on the way in, but that's just what it seems like to me. When I run bittorrent and it finishes, if I remove the torrent and add it again so it rescans the files, a few of the pieces will be red again and it will redownload them. Whenever I do something offline it seems ok, like I can play Dragon Age for hours without any crashes.
I'm using onboard ethernet. Is there any way to test if it's going bad? Computer is about 3 years old.
