Weird problem with GTX285....

Got a weird problem that only started recently with my GTX 285.
Here's the problem: Intermittant pausing. It'll run fine for about 2-3 seconds, then just stop doing the work unit, then start working again after 2-3 seconds. If I'm looking at the display (F@H viewer) when it pauses, it sends one of my cores into 100% usage. It then drops back down to low usage once F@H starts working again or I close out of the viewer.

The back story is that I had taken my card out for cleaning the case as I had just gotten new fans. Put in the new fans and everything works fine. I took my card out again and opened it up to replace the thermal paste and ram thermal pads. (have a thread in nvidia cards in this forum about this). Long story short, didn't know there was a gap between the heatsink and ram and had run two different burn-in tests before realizing there was a problem with the ram. Didn't turn on the card for a week. Replaced TIM pads for the ram and other components which needed TIM pads. Card's running fine with games now.

I had also just upgraded to 182.06 when I had started noticing a problem with F@H. Figured it could be a driver issue, so I got those new forceware 185's. No dice on that either. The 285 is running about 45-50C in F@H and games.

Any ideas? Going to open up the case again tonight and start reseating the card and checking the wiring, but past that, can't figure out what's wrong. Also having an issue with my DVD drive, so maybe there's a weird short or something.
 
easy problem to solve.. dont use the F@H viewer.. its completely borked for the gpu client.. use fahmon or fahspy to keep track of your progress.. that is if the problem is only happening when you look at the F@H viewer.. if its happening when your not.. then i have no clue..
 
Well. I can't quite tell if it's only when the viewer is open, it's just that I notice it when it's open.

Dunno about most others, but I can hear my card whine at a high pitch when it's running F@H and i can hear the on-off-on-off happen regardless of whether the view is open.

I'll try one of those other programs you mentioned and see if it's happening there as well.
 
Hey guys, just went over to F@H main forums to check out if anyone else had this problem.
Turns out, this thread explains that 590X series WUs with core:14 requires additional checks so it will start and stop a lot. Or at least that's how I read it. Don't know much of the tech speak regarding WUs.
So thankfully, I didn't screw something up.

Yeah, I had a feeling it was that. Hence my question above :).
 
Ahh alright, thanks man. Figured something might be up with the WUs, but just wanted to be sure about it.
