I'm trying to help my sister with her first reformat and I've run across a very odd occurrance.

She recently purchased a new Seagate ST3160023A 160 GB hard drive on an IDE interface. The problem is that the drive is detected in BIOS, and even in Windows under the device manager, but yet it doesn't appear in My Computer for use.

Before her format on the Windows (C) partition, we already formatted this new drive, so that she could back up some essential files that she needed, so it's not a matter of being formatted or not because it is.

Any thoughts on why this might be or how to remedy it?

Does she have SP1 and SP2 installed? I think it was SP1 that fixed the issue with drives larger than 147gb. Try installing Sp1 or 2 and see if it is listed in my computer.
 
Ok, I guess I'll post further information.

I know Service Pack 1 would have to be installed on older versions of Windows because they wouldn't recognize drives over 147 GB. She already has installed SP1, and it appears under the "Disk Drives" section in Device Manager. I might advise her to try SP2, but I'd rather she didn't. It's just a pain in the butt, is all.

And I have no idea what Disk Management could accomplish, as we already formatted before she began reformating the main Windows drive.

Any other suggestions?
