Ok, so out of the blue, my computer started shutting off by itself. Generally a couple minutes after booting it up. It was about time to upgrade anyways, so I went out and baught a new case, another stick of 512 ddr, a GF6800, and a 120 gb harddrive. I stripped my computer and basiclly started from scratch again (aside from the cd drives and the mb), and to my dismay, the problem still exists. Then I discovered that if I lay my computer on it's side, it never turns off. I've tried two power supplies, and both give the same result. Can someone please help me come up with an explaination for this?
 
I had the exact same problem, turning on it's side and all. And when I turned it back on, it told me it had shut down for a thermal event (overheat) and said at the bottom 423C

What hardware are you using? CPU, MB, RAM and case in particuliar.

Mine would only do it when it was idle. I could play UT2K3 for hours, but leave it sitting to share files and off it went. Unfortunately for hopes of fixing yours, it just stopped doing it all on it's own. I'm curious to see if you get a better answer, though. If you do figure it out, please post what you do.
 
Heatsink not fitted properly? If it's a tower system, it would explain why it's better on it's side, because gravity helps hold the the heatsink over the CPU better.
 
I reattattched the heatsink and fan and put more thermal grease on there. I don't think anything is touching the mb eitehr...
 
When you lay the computer on its side, is this with the cover on the case or off?
