Weird Cert. Question

Okay so I'm really getting into networking lately. I haven't had any experience with anything big yet. Basic wireless networks, very basic small business networks with unmanaged switches etc.

Now it seems that the norms for certs are all Cisco certifications.

My question is, what if a company doesn't use Cisco equipment? Do the certs still have any merit?
