The problem is solved now, but I don't know how it was. I built a new system and used my old 8X4X48 hp burner in it for a while. I got a new lite-on 52X32X52 burner and it would only detect it as a cd-rom. So I tried putting my old burner back in and it too was detected as a cd-rom. I tried to fix it with several different methods. Nothing worked so I just gave up on it for a while. About a month later I figured it was time to try to fix it and it now works. I did nothing to try to fix it. I mean I don't mind that it is fixed:) but I would like to know why it maybe fixed itself?

perhaps you installed the burning software (nero) or some other software that caused the drive to be recognized?

I installed no software, nor did I remove any. And yes i've burned audio and data cd's both work fine. I've never had any problems work themselves out before.

By the way, when I first installed the drive I installed proper drivers.

Uh....there are no drivers for optical drives, unless your running DOS.
