sirmonkey is correct. Anyone with enough cores can receive and crunch bigadvs. However, you will not get bonus points for them until you complete 10 A2 or A3 WUs. This is why many folks suggest to let it crunch 10 regular SMP A2 or A3 work units against your passkey before adding the -bigadv flag. The normal units run much faster allowing you to become bonus qualified quicker.
If you are running on Linux, it is very unlikely, but possible, that you will get an A1 unit. However, so long as you have the -advmethods flag set, and are running Linux, chances are very high that you will get an A2 or A3 unit. There is plenty of work so unless there is a server problem at Stanford, your biggest risk, you shouldn't get an A1 on a Linux client but yes, it is possible to. However, I haven't seen an A1 on a Linux client in a long time.what happens if it grabs A1 units though?

Switching to the eVGA VM isn't going to reduce your chances of getting A1 units. If you happen to get a lot of them then you're just a bit unlucky. Fold them and hope that the next batch are A2 or A3 units.
