I recently ordered a Thermaltake Volcano 12 to go with my shiny new ABIT NF7-S and XP-M 2600+ from the egg, but when I plucked it from the box, it seemed relatively heavy. I did a little research (after I ordered... really should learn to do more before), and found that AMD recommends a max. 300g for Socket A heat sinks. The Volcano 12 is about 700g. I'm just curious if my concerns about it breaking/falling off are unfounded, or I should RMA it for a lighter one. Thanks.
 
I am using a volcano 12, had no problems with it (And I carry my computer to LAN parties and such with it on)

You will be find as long as you don't bounce your computer a lot/very hard
 
just a question...why did you order such a crappy heatsink? thats an honest question, with so many advanced awesome heatsinks, why did you get one of the ill-performing volcano series?

in any case, you are fine. my friend has a Zalman 7000 Cu which is more than that I believe and weve taken it to LANs and such, in the back of my bumpy car, and its been fine.
 
For all of the other volcano heatsinks I'd say no but that one looks nice. I haven't seen any temps or reviews but the actual heatsink looks a lot like the SLK ones. I've used a Volcano 7 (crap) but that new volcano looks nice. Though, if I had the option I'd head straight for a Panaflo / SLK combo.
 
I've got the A64 version of the heatsink, the Venus 12 (I believe these are the same heatsink, not 100% on that though) it got very nice reviews, and at least at the time I bought it, looked like the best A64 heatsink out there. I idle around 28-29C at stock settings, and with a 200 mhz OC I idle at 30, both of these with the fan only at half it's speed. If I crank it to vaccuum cleaner level, it can go down to 26 idle. But then again I have some pretty powerful fans throughout the rest of the case, 4 of which are high-powered Papst fans, with one pointing right into the hsf. Back to your original question.... I have an A64, and I move this thing without the slightest bit of caution, and have no problem. As long as you attach it correctly, you shouldn't have problems.

Just be careful and I'm sure you'll be fine, otherwise why would they make it if it's a real problem ...
 
i doubt the sink is 700G, because my zalman weighs less and is much larger.
 
The Zalman 7000 bolts THROUGH the motherboard though (or at least the one I ordered did). It's not like it's being held on by the plastic CPU socket or anything
 
I read the topic hoping for "Man, I havn't left my computer chair in eight months and have been eating nothing but doritos. I now weigh 380lbs, should I see a doctor?". This thread doesn't deliver :D

But seriously, all you need to do is lay your case on it's side if you're transporting it and it will be fine. Many people use beefy heatsinks and I havn't heard of any socket breakages happening. Only thing that comes to mind was a dude with one of those gigantic swiftech 'sinks, bolted to the motherboard -- he was driving it somewhere, the box was standing upright, he went over some slightly bumpy road or something, and the 'sink tore a chunk out of his motherboard.. :eek: heh
 
Oh yea - PUT A GRILL ON THAT FAN!!! IT could very easily go down in the finger chopper heatsink hall of fame :(

I accidentally touched a kingwin (dont remember them model) on a clients fan and litterally got a chunk of skin cut off :eek:

hahaha that had me laughing out loud at work, jerk ;)
 
just to add to the no worries department i wouldn't.. i have a watercooling setup and the blocks and the hoses are usualy heavier than a heatsink especialy since the hoses usually add quite a bit of stress on the socket and i have never had a prob.... had a few bend and warp around the socket from too much pressure but nothing happened

Also, I have the had a finger slip into a Delta High Performance 120 and thought i was going to lose my finger!!! :eek:
