I have 2 systems with Barton 2500+ in them and I want to overclock them.
One has an MSI mobo (my "older" system) and the other is A7V600.

How do I know whether my chips are unlockable or not?
Is there a serial number or something to check?

Try to increase the multiplier and reboot, if it works then it's unlocked, if it doesn't then it's not.
:p

But teh 2500+ bartons dont need an unlocked multiplier really, just get some DDR400 ram which is the most common right now and drop the FSB to 200mhz, and you have a 2.2ghz 3200+

Thanks! I've read a few threads and that's pretty much what most ppl did.

But I also read in one thread that a guy was able to increase the multiplier in his BIOS and he thought it worked but in actuallity it wasn't. The BIOS let him change it but it wasn't changing at all.

I'm guessing that before I try though, I will need to do the pencil mod and close off the bridges on the chip?
I can't remember which bridges though.

i tryed to unlock an 04 barton... needless to say that chip is now a paperweight

yes, either way you'll be able to change the multiplier in the bios but if your CPU isnt clocked any higher in windows then it's locked, i wouldnt even bother trying to mod the processors, it doesn't always work anyhow, just increase the FSB to 200 and call it good.

Use CPU-Z to make sure that it's changing or not.
