I am getting a Western Digital Raptor X 150GB 10,000 RPM Hard Drive and was wondering if its noise levels are unbearably high...

it's louder than an average hard drive, but the definition of 'unbearable' varies from person to person. I run two raptors in RAID 0 and I'm not bothered by the noise.

I had one and took it back because of the noise. The platters spinning were fine. But the noise of the actuator arm was loud AND random. It made a "clunk..clunk clunk clunk..clunk .clunk" noise every few minutes. It wasn't like a fan noise or something steady that blends in. If all ran faster on le PC it might have been worth it but I booted the same and and all the rest. Maybe Raptor made a difference a few years ago on a frumpy P4 1.8 or something but it didnt do squat on my PC from this year.

Mine is actually out of my case for the time being (there's no circulation in there, so it would get hot if I left it in) and it's not hideously loud or anything. The noise doesn't bother me.

However, I'm still planning to move it to another machine and make my main box diskless. That will quiet it still further :D

Any drive that "clunks" is not healthy, so posting your impression of that drive without experiencing a healthy one, isn't very fair or helpful.

The only time I have noticed it being loud is when moving large, unsequential files over my network. Other than that, I don't notice it in my Antec Super Lanboy. I don't even hear it over my WD320KS unless I am moving large files around.
