I've purchased WD 5000AAKS drive and hooked it up via SATA on windows XP. I used WD lifeguard tool to recognize the drive and everything was fine. Keep in mind that I have another drive that my windows is installed on. Later on I decide to reinstall windows for w/e reasons. I installed the windows and this is were problems started. If the WD drive is hooked up then the windows wont start. If the WD driver is coonnected when windows started then windows will freeze and will display blue screen with following info.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you're computer.

MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart you're computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask you're hardware or software manufacture for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as chaching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe mode to remove or disable components, restart youre computer, presss F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode

Techinal information:

*** STOP: 0x0000008C (0x00000004, 0x80545FF0, 0xB2000000, 0x00070F0F)

Begining dump of physical memory

Safe mode doesn't work with WD hooked up.

Here is another thing. When I go to BIOS the BIOS wont display any information about the WD drive, it just shows this

Anyways can someone please help me with this frustrating situation.

First, are the settings all correct for the SATA controller(s) in the bios?
Secondly, when you (re)install windows - make sure to have all other drives disconnected other than the one you're actually installing on. This helps remove any conflicts (e.g. drive lettering and etc).

Can't really tell what the exact problem is, but you should atleast get those 2 factors out of the question.

I'm not sure how to check settings and if they are correct or not. Can you tell me please?

Windows is already installed I just can't use the drive because as soon as I connect it the windows stalls and brings me back to that blue screen

Try the drive in a diffrent machine and format it, don't assign it a drive letter yet, then put it into the crashing machine and assign it a drive letter.

I can't format the drive because I have files on it that I can't get rid of and I don't have another computer I could use
