Watercooling vs current HSF's

I never seem to see water cooling reviews that use the current generation of very effective air coolers. I don't care if watercooling can beat the stock cooler ^^ anything can. I was interested in seeing watercooling vs Tuniq120 or Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, but cannot really find compatible comparisons (usually different cpu's etc)

Any suggestions?
 
The difference is typically seen once additional voltage is applied to the CPU. For overclocking, the only real advantage of watercooling is you pretty much can run silent where air cooling requires many fans moving alot of air to remove the heat.

This is why a good aircooling rig will overclock as well as a watercooling rig but at the cost of noise.
 
At stock... nothing...

But pushing an 88% OC with a 20% increase in voltage... Then you see benefits. The noise level decreases drastically, as do the temperatures...

If the only difference between water and air right now is noise... I think I would be sorely disappointed in watercooling. I have my two PCs four feet from my bed as well as an air conditioner running whenever I am home. I have gotten accustomed to the background noise of the MANY fans in the two towers and the AC unit.

Of course to me "Stock" is a bad word. Despite my horrendous experience with my last AMD processor (10% overclockability) at very low temps. I fully intend to OC whenever possible.

I wish they released the new coolIT chiller the 12 TEC "Boreas" so I could have something more effective. I don't mind paying more for quality but am not willing to pay for phase change systems which cost too much and do not cool everything I would like cooled.

Before you complain about the CoolIT :The thing about their products that appeal to me is the low maintenance. I would build a custom loop if I didn't have to worry about it once it is installed.

Comments? Suggestions?
The new system will be built around the end of june... I have some time to wait (especial for extreme cooling)
 
You have to remember who's footing the bill for reviews when you think about the validity of it.

Let's face it, most people water cool so they can say they are water cooling. I just love the look on the hospital staff (It's usually priceless) where I work when I tell them I am cooling my computer with water.

There a few speed freaks around here that will try to get you to get the biggest baddest cooling solution out there. I use Aqua Computer gear because it does what I want it to and it looks damn good doing it. Alternatively a Zalman fan also works great as well, but it just doesn't have the visual appeal of an Aquatube.
 
Depending on the water cooling loop you're running, you can easily push a system harder than you can with air and with a larger margin of safty. My max temp at my max OC (100%) at a normal room temp of 70-72f is only around 50% of the max Tjunction for my CPU. Other folks I know running high end air with the same CPU and MoBo are running close to 80% or sometimes more of their max. I like the extra margin that I have just in case.
But the others folks are generally correct when they say that there isn't much differance between high-end air and a normal water cooling setup. If you go with a extreme setup you will get lower temps, if it helps you get a better OC or not, that depends on how hard you are willing to push your system.
 
I agree with you on the looks and I am partially doing this for the wow factor. Looking cool is one thing, I still want to honestly answer "why didnt you do it this way..." by saying this is a superior cooling solution.

I do want to think of some elegant way of doing this. I want to have the cpu/vid/mobo cooled and a thermalright 120ultra doesn't quite nail the other components. I really just want something between water and phase that costs somewhere between water and phase. Chilling the water sounds like a great idea for example... but a refrigerator water chiller is out of the question due to size...

Just need a few good ideas...

TEC waterblocks are reliable now? I never really considered them in the past because everyone knows someone who's cousin had a pelt that failed...

If they are reliable how many watts is required for a heavily oc'd core2 duo ?

TEC's are no longer viable solutions, they cost more to power then a chiller or other phase change rig,they are hard to work with and i flat out will not advise on a TEC system,they just wont give you the numbers many seek these days. Tec's can work great,but you have to change the way you overclock. A chiller would keep the entire system cool,make your dinner and fold your sock's...so to speak
 
With moderate overclocks, air can hold its own at the sacrifice of noise. However, once we break the 33% OC barrier, water starts to really show its stuff. I can manage a 50%+ overclock on water that would next to impossible on air. I've managed to get my e6600 which is stock at 2.4 all the way to 3.7 at 1.525 vcore with 55-57C on load on my secondary rig. There's no way you can get similar results with just a heat sink and fan swapped in.
 
OP since a phase unit will not cool everything why not get a chiller? Gets negatives on all componets.

BitchBreaker makes alcohol chillers for friends, associates, and anyone else who has got some scoots. He makes really well designed stuff. If I ever decided to go chilled this is the guy I would be talking to. :D
