OK..maybe this is a repost but I have not seen this. What are are your thoughts on this? And has it gotten out of hand with this type of watercooling?

There's one made in Germany, forgot the company name, which makes a Watercooled PSU. It's not in production anymore, but it used to be Aqua Computer cooled.

It's in G.Gnome's WMD Part II.
 
Yea, that's the one, if it's brand Engleking. According to G. Gnome.

Watercooling PSU's adds a lot of heat. Unless it's a seperate line.


I would rather get a set of blocks for the mosfets that replace the heatsink, instead of one that cools the case of the supply. That alphacool looks pretty nice, but it's $279 and not too strong either. Compared to what you can get.

Um .... I dont think so....Ill stick with my PCP&C.....noise and all....
 
I'd rather chose what PSU to have cooled then have someone WC a POS brand and charge $300 for it. Speaking of which, my enermax served me well......

now that there are silent fanless solutions in the 500W+ range (eg. antec phantom and others) i really dont see apoint unless someone comes up with a reliable 1KW liquid PSU or somthing. too much trouble and investment for somthing i can do with a fanless part. its not like watercooling the psu is going to let me overclock it, and if a regular PSU is properly cooled it wont hurt your OC on other parts.
 
i like the idea of that, however ill stick to a PSU with a 140mm fan since its pretty inaudible and being cooled just fine.

Passive PSUs still need airflow to stay efficient and not overheat, and they trust that their added heatsinks and bulk will combine with existing case airflow and be able stay cool enough. Water cooling could be a double edged sword in this case, as many people realize they need less case airflow with components water cooled, reducing the airflow their PSU needs.

There are plenty of very quiet PSUs right now, and you can afford to buy a much higher quality PSU and have change to spare to buy a replacement fan if you find the stock fan too loud (for a 'quiet' labeled PSU), and even buy a few new blocks for components that deserve to be water cooled.
 
I totaly agree that there has to be ample air flow for the fanless PSU's to work, but it isnt much. The Phantom in particular is quite happy running with very little airflow in my experience. I use it primarily in HTPC's where noise is a major problem. Typically this means i have a single very quiet 80mm fan for intake and a pair of 60mm fans for exhaust. The design of the Phantom allows for convection to help cool it as it has heat sinks that protrude from the rear.
 
G-gnome isn't using that AC PSU - they don't make them anymore, so he slapped an Aquadrive Micro HDD block onto a PSU (from that same company) instead.

And liquid coming within a fraction of an inch of your CPU/GPU(s) is? ;)

Done properly, water cooled PSUs can stay just as cool as with a fan, while being dead silent (assuming it makes no electircal noise). Done poorly...:eek:
