Vsync being forced?

I recently upgraded to the latest Nvidia drivers for my MSI geforce4 ti 4200 (using reference drivers) when i try to disable Vsync in global settings or allow it to use application settings, Vsync is still locked.

I can prove this by using quake2's timedemo tool. no matter if Vsync is turned off or allowed to use application (in quake its under video>sync every frame = no) I get a constant 85 FPS, the same as my monitor's refresh rate... with the old driver i was using and Vsync disabled, I could get >320 FPS

So what's going on here?!?

I've even tried making a custom profile for JUST quake2 and nada, vsync is still locked (on).

Any ideas?

I don't use any AA or AF for any game. im sure though if i did, even using the highest setting, i would still be able to break 85fps, even 84fps or 86fps would show vsync being disabled though... I get a solid 85 fps just like my monitor's set refresh rate...

hmm wonder if FPS is caped like it is in wolfenstien ET, you have to Edit the config file for it to let you go beyond 85fps, you can check that

well it's funny cuz i have been using a burned directory of Quake2 just for benchmarking purposes (seeing the framerate going up over the years has been interesting), and I have never had this problem before just until recently with the latest Nvidia drivers... since the directory was originally burned to a cd then transfered to disk whenever i use it, I know none of the configs have changed.

I just tried timedemo with quake3 and got 181fps, so maybe it is just this one game and something with the nvidia drivers for older openGL based games? does quake3 use d3d or opengl?
