Guys, I am back, its 4:00am and I cant sleep, mainly because I am designing a network for a small business, needless to say, im bored!

I recently started a company up, Stech Services, which I mainly do anything in computers for customers, in home or pickup. I want to have a nice almost answering service for when I am out doing service calls.

I have looked into different VOip companies, but could use your help. I have a few questions if anyone has the time to help me out. Considering I have a 2.5mb download 512kbps upload DSL connection, would this be sufficent enough for VOip services, if so, how much bandwidth is actually used to make a call? Also, will my computer need to be turned on at ALL TIMES, or will an answering machine pickup if my computer is off?

If you suggest using VOip and want to suggest GOOD companies with low rates and either free or cheap setup fees, please let me know!
 
It actually depends on the codec's used by your VOIP provider. The g711a thats quite popular is about 13kbps per line and gives excellent quality. the GSM codec uses (guessing here) 3-4kbps and has the same quality as your GSM based cell phone.

Will your computer have to be turned on at all times? That depends on the hardware you use. If you use something to connect a regular analog phone up, no you will not have to have your computer hooked up. If you prefer a soft-phone, no additional hardware is used, but your computer will be running a program to make the calls.

I dont know any other companies besides the one I work for, but we're regional to VA and WV and so far, we're only doing VOIP for our dedicated circuits customers for reliability purposes.

I have it connected to my DSL (8MB/1MB) and it works flawlessly.
One thing to consider, for the best performance, your router must do some sort of QoS for the voice to not get hosed when downloading/uploading at maximum rate, otherwise, you get choppy calls.
 
Vonage. They allow two different modes.....standard and bandwidth saver. Check it out. Works flawlessly for me......never had any bandwidth issues on the cable modem. I am so glad I don't have DSL though....damn phone company.
