My hardware specs are in sig. Nothing amazing, but not aweful either.. Yet, VMware is still so sluggish. I gave up on version 8, it was just too slow. I upgraded to version 9, which was a huge improvement, but still there is a performance issue. Biggest issue; Unity mode is frustrating sometimes,.. slow and buggy... I would go "fullscreen": VM, but it doesn't like eyefinity. Not to mention, I often need to switch back to fullscreen mode to "find" lost screens from unity mode.

What can I do to improve performance? Budget is $1,000. I work from home and use my system 8-12 hours a day... I prefer to keep work material on a VM and have no issues investing to improve performance. I've considered dual boot, or a hot swap SSD bay.. but VMware is just so convenient... it would be my preferred solution to improve VM performance first, if possible. Ideas welcome.
 
Your first step is to define sluggish, slow, and buggy.

What are you doing that's slow? What load are you running? When is it slow? Is disk access slow? Video? General compute performance?

I've used Workstation without issue on systems far less powerful than that without issue. So my initial guesses would be that you've got some kind of configuration issue, a ridiculous load, or unrealistic expectations.

What are you doing on the VMs with reference to having 3 30" monitors? If you're driving a bunch of that resolution from VMs, I'd guess that to be related.

Performance in a VM is usually disk related. Good SSD solves that. I hate the Unity type modes...always caused performance problems.
 
Performance within a full screen VM is actually excellent. I run into all the issues when using Unity. Seems it is just a limitation of that feature.
