VMware: IDE vs SCSI disk speed?

My google capabilities are failing me. I'm trying to find a comparison or review of speed differences between using an IDE or SCSI virtual disk in VMware Workstation. I could probably create a whole bunch of test scenarios, but it's easier to read about it. :D

It's been recommended to use LSI or Buslogic SCSI over IDE when creating VM's, but I wanted to know why. Is there a speed difference? If so, what is it? Anyone have benchmarks on a given system comparing native vs emulated SCSI vs emulated IDE?

Long and short: I have an old Windows XP virtual I've kept up-to-date for years that started with a virtual IDE disk. I just ran Crystal DiskMark and it's about 1/4th the speed of my native HDD running on the host Windows 7 OS. I always knew an emulated disk would be slower, but not that much slower. Would converting it to SCSI make it faster?
 
One thing is that you cant expand the disk size of an IDE disk after creation. You can for SCSI.
Hard to say about speed but the Paravirtual SCSI adapter is the fastest, i forget if it's available on workstation though.
