vmware and raids?

hey all, useing vmware fusion, or for that matter any free or cheap virtualized setup, could I messes with raid setups.

I.E. make 8 virtual drives, use the vm to raid them as a fake hardware raid, then further mess with software raids to create a nested raid.

I just want to do this so I dont have to buy 8 cheap hdd's and a raid controller just to study and learn raids.

anyways if ya all could provide any insight in to the best way to do this that would be great.

I guess you could make 8 HDs and do software RAID in the guest...but nothing like hardware RAID.
 
You can create multiple virtual HD's, but you'll be limited to the software raid options within your OS of choice.

Ok. At least I can mess with zfs and software raids.

But no way at all to creat 8 fake drives and a false hardware lvl raid with any virtualized setup then? It has to be entirely software created. Dang.
 
You can not make a virtual raid and even if you did there would be no performance gain.
 
You really don't need to setup a test environment to understand RAID. Just do some Google searches and you'll discover everything you need to know.
 
don't need or want a performance gain, and also, if I need to make adjustments on a live system, I don't want to have just "read up" on the subject.

so from what I gather, I can run any software based raids, but I can't fake a hardware level raid. ok cool.

so is it possible to do nested raids on a software level only ?

The thing about RAID is this...the ideas and functionality are the same across RAID hardware and software, but the implementation and management is completely different. Doing software RAID on Windows is nothing like hardware RAID. So you're going to be learning very specific cases.
