vMotion with different CPU's

I learned how to use EVC to use vMotion with different CPU's. Did i do this right? I went to the Enhanced VMotion Compatibility (EVC) processor support page here http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/mi...nguage=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1003212 and noticed with my X3440 and Core i3 I could go as high as Intel® Xeon® Core™ i7 EVC Mode. So i set it to that and that was pretty much it. I did a vMotion and everything worked! This was too easy.

Looks like I will not need to upgrade to another X3440 which was my plan when i got some more money.

Are there any downsides to using EVC mode?

The only downside is that you lose the possibility of using cpu features that are newer than your EVC level. Usually this is no big deal, but for cetain specialized software, it could matter.
 
Like Varg said very little downsides.... You may not just get some new instruction sets like the AES hardware encryption stuff in the newest CPUs...but I don't know anyone that actually uses those so it doesn't matter.
