Little background, needed a new SQL box that was primarily going to be used for replication, so we spec'd out a HP DL380 G7 with dual P410s and 16 SAS drives, dual X5680s and 120 GB of ram. Figured we might as well throw ESXi on it and use it for VMs as well since it's so overbuilt for its purpose.
So, ESXi 4.1 is installed on an HP usb drive, licensing is Enterprise Plus. Under advanced settings, the P410i and P410 cards are set to passthrough. On the guest settings, added the two PCI devices, no other virtual disk configured for it. Boot the guest with the Server 2008 R2 install, of course it doesn't see any drives, install drivers, it recognizes that the P410 and P410i are there and attempts to install the drivers. Takes longer then normal but doesn't give any errors, but after driver installation, there's still no drives available to install windows onto. I have 4 logical drives configured, 2 on each card and if I'm not using pass through I can configure them for local disk within ESXi. Also tried installing Server 2003 R2 x64 but ran into the same issues.
Calls are open with VMware and HP, but I'm just wondering if anyones run into this before or if this configuration isn't supported. HP support seems to think it may not be supported with their drivers since they're more hardware specific then just the card but VMware support seems to think it should work. Waiting to hear back from them on the final verdict. Anway, just wondering if anyone out there as has seen this before with vmdirectpath and if there was a fix.
