Vista boot from External HD.

My GF has a Presario R3000 laptop (I had nothing to do with that choice, it was before me) I know you can dual boot XP and VISTA from the same machine but she has it in her head that she wants to put Vista on an external HD and boot from there. Is this possible?

She is a soon to be Architect so she mostly uses her Laptop for Autocad and other programs like that. She has been telling me that most the the architectual programs have problems with Vista, but for whatever reason she wants it still.
 
Unless you would be using external SATA connections, there's no point in even considering it. Assuming her CAD programs have issues with Vista (they may have been resolved by now), leave XP on there. Either dual boot, or install a Vista-like theme on it for her.
