Vista audio problems

Basically i have an old Altec Lansing 5.1 PC speaker setup that's rear speakers aren't working in Vista, i've connected it through both my old Creative Audigy Gamer card (patched to Vista 32bit) and through the onboard audio that is also patched (listed on compatible Vista audio devices) and still no rear channel sound. . .any ideas?
