Forgive me if I sound like a n00b...

I have a set of Klipsch 5.1 promedias and Vista. For some reason I can't get my music (itunes or winamp) to play through all five speakers. All I get is essentially a 2.1 setup. I've gone into control panel and set my sound options to 5.1. I have even done the speaker test through Vista and there is sound coming out of every speaker in the right channel order (FR, FL, C, RR, RL, Sub). So I know I have the hardware hooked up right. Yet, when I play music in iTunes or Winamp I get 2.1 again.

Is there something I'm missing?

-I'm using my on board evga 680i audio.

Im gonna take a stab in the dark here, but isnt music in stereo format (2.1)?

Have you watched a DVD, or played a videogame that supports surround?

When I listen to music I always take it out of surround on my onkyo and put it into stereo... it sounds better.

Good idea, I'll give that a shot when I get home. I was able although, to run all 5 speakers in XP. Maybe that has changed in Vista.

Music is stereo (it's not even 2.1, it's 2.0, any bass redirection isn't inherent). The exception to this is some SACDs and DVD-As.

I would assume there's some settings you can play with in Vista that will send your stereo signal to all five speakers, but I don't know for sure.

I'm not sure if it can be done via the onboard sound. For creative cards, they have the CMSS feature that upsamples stereo and outputs to all speakers.

Maybe you can try checking the control panel application that's installed for the onboard to see if there's such options.

Honestly I dont know, Ive used headphones(noise canceling) for the past 6 years.

It seems that in computer audio, most 5-7.1 systems have the same satellites around the room, whereas in home audio, most of the time the fronts are larger than the rear and the center channel is of different design.

I know with my onkyo/polk setup if I listen to music in surround, its actually quite annoying.. all the vocals seem to come out of the center channel, then music all around.

More speakers does not mean louder

It is 2.1. I was able to get a movie to play in 5.1. I had a creative card and I just switched to my on board audio. It makes sense that only creative cards have that feature. I think that is what confused me.
