Does anybody have any opinions on Visiontek's graphics cards ? Anyone ever deal with them for RMA ? Overclock their cards ? I'm debating between them and Asus for a friend's 280X. Asus has better stock clocks, I have good history with them and what looks like a better cooler. Visiontek is $40 cheaper and has lifetime warranty.

Any 280X is better than the ASUS 280X. Any of them.
Also, you shouldn't buy ASUS products in general.

Honestly, Visiontek is little more than a "rent a brand name" on a bunch of white-box components nowadays. Kinda like "Zenith".

They haven't been a real, cohesive brand since about 2002-2003 (when they essentially got taken over by the bank, all production was outsourced overseas, and a big chunk of the employees moved over to what became BFG Technologies).

Look at Sapphire and PowerColor as well as Gigabyte.

Yeah I was surprised they still made cards, did a Google search and found the [H] article about them going bankrupt in 2002.

Visiontek is up and running fine these past few years. They are in Chicago. I've called for support and got an American support rep.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy their cards, however I'm not sure how well they overclock.

That's good to hear about the support. I do plan on overclocking the card and the Asus has better speeds out of the gate but with the $40 saved I can get a better PSU so I am leaning towards VisionTek.

In another thread the XFX Rep suggested that you try and call a company if you have any questions. If it's difficult to get a hold of someone, or even find a number, then it's likely you will have issues getting service. You can ask them about their policy on O/C'ing and to clarify their "lifetime" warranty. Lifetime warranties are often not what they appear.

The number you got was essentially a call center. They have exactly jack and squat to do with the actual production of the cards anymore.

I wouldn't trust Visiontek's "lifetime warranty" the way the brand is run they can declare bankruptcy any second without actually losing anything because other than the name they have no assets and outsource everything. It's essentially a branding operation.

$40 on a 280X is a ton of money, isn't there any middle ground? I'd look at MSI, Gigabyte or XFX. I like ASUS cards but the 280X can be had for about $200 so $40 is about a %20 premium, which is pretty steep.

You may be able to get a 280X for $200 in the USA but in Canada they're $280-340. I'm buying it from work and the only two 280X we have in stock are Asus and VisionTek. I don't feel like waiting a week to have another brand.

The thing is, more reputable vendors simply don't carry VisionTek product anymore. But they WILL carry Asus.

As for waiting a week for another brand. Patience is a virtue. Especially when it's not a vendor's fault that Canadian Postal Service is clown shoes.

My store carries other brands of video cards, just don`t have any of the 280X`s in stock at my location other than those 2.

Also Newegg, TigerDirect and Amazon all carry graphics cards made by VisionTek. I agree that patience should be exercised and luckily I can wait if needed, just don't want to :)

How does the 280X stack up with the 7970. I know the chips are the same but the clock speed is different and the boost clock is new. I might have a 280X soon.

The 280x is basically the 7970 ghz edition. I was able to flash my sapphire vaporx 7970 ghz to a 280x no problems. I think also with the 280x's there are two types one with dual 6pin power connectors and one with an 8 and a 6 pin... if you can get the later. Also at this point the r9 290s are dirt cheap and might be worth the extra cash.
