Just wanted to share my experience on this...
box specs:
dual quad-core 1366 xeons, 24 gigs DDR3 ECC, supremely cheap-o Inland "superspeed" USB 3.0 card (cost me $6 from Microcenter),
Rosewill 802.11ac dual antenna USB adapter
Using esxi 5.1, PCI Passthrough works flawlessly when using this passed into a server 2008 R2 VM. I've not tried this with linux yet; I'm not sure how well linux supports the realtek wireless chipsets, but I may try it at some point. I haven't tried esxi 5.5 yet as I hear a lot of pass-thru stuff is broken in it.
