Is separate hardware (SAN, hosts, etc) used for virtual server & desktop environments or are they done on the same hardware?

I figure it all depends on the requirements of the company & whether the hardware can actually handle the workload. Just curious to see how you guys do the implementations..
 
For me, it depends on the size of the deployment, how many servers/DT's are you looking at
 
As always, it depends. Some people use mixed and some don't. It often depends on the size. For a smaller VDI type deployment you can just do resource pools..for a large one you may want dedicated gear.
 
Desktop: It will be about 40 users with your basic applications (Office)

Servers: DC, File, Exchange, SQL

Think I will go the resource pool route after the assessment is done. I don't expect the IOPS or bandwidth requirement to be high. However with boot storms and such, I would like some SSD drives in there. Unfortunately with Dell, if I need to buy a SSD SAN, I will need to get 8 SSD and 8 450 drives--which is not enough density.
 
Let me tell you, a "boot storm" with 40 users will not have that much impact, I wouldn't even call it a storm. I currently have a 300 user base without SSD cache, straight 15k FC Drives. I followed the guides for load per datastore, host, etc, to the T. It's not that bad, however, not all 300 boot up in the morning at the same time. I would say about 1/2-2/3 and I don't see any issues.

Where I do see issues, is when we do Virus DAT updates or WSUS updates. We've had to change our scheduling on this to not impact the bussiness. Sure it's nice to have SSD cache etc, but in an enterprise environment, adding SSD's to our Clariion, the cost was way out there on top of the licensing cost to enable FAST VP and FAST Cache.

Right now, we have an iniative to separte our Gov't Client's data from our Commercial Clients, physically. I'm working on migrating away from the Clariion to a VNX 5300. This is when I have the opportunity to rework the storage needs, SATA for File Shares, mixture of SAS/SSD for Virtual and DB in pools etc.

When I get to work this morning, i'll edit my post. There is a specific site I refer to for View, it's great, just can't find it right now and I need to get ready for work..lol.

Nice link. Thanks. You are right--15 k SAS drives should do the trick to meet the IOPS. I'm just being extra cautious.
