Hi,
Been reading peoples reviews of the Viewsonic VX910 X monitor and starting to seriously think about buying one. Can anyone that has already got this monitor let me know how it handles lower resolutions, I ask this as most of my gaming is done @ 1024 x 768, and I certainly don't want to have to upgrade my 9800pro just so I can play games at the monitor’s native resolution.

Also anyone know when the newer model VX912 (12ms panel) will be coming out, trying to work out if I should wait a bit long....

Thanks!

Hi - I own the VX910, got it ~10 days ago, I also run it on a 9800 pro, however I play almost all my games at 1280x1024 (except doom 3). I did try BF: Vietnam at 1024x768 because it wouldn't support a higher resolution and it looked pretty bad. Doom 3 looks good, but it looks good at just about any resolution.

If you like I can mess with some games @ 1024x768 and see how they look. One question though - why aren't you running at 1280x1024? My 9800 pro seems to handle that resolution fine in most games.

That would be great if you could try out some more games at lower resolutions.
Also I suppose I've just got in the habit of running at 1024 x 768, bear in mind I like to run games at max detail and with anti-aliasing and antisotropic filtering at high settings.

Mine will arrive in a few hours. I'll get you a few pictures tonight.

I'll do Farcry, BF:V, Doom 3, Eve Online.

If you want anything else doing just ask. I've probably got it.

I didn't take any pictures (I could if you like, but it looks like Iratus has that covered), so I will just give you my impressions of Far Cry @ 1024x768 and UT2k4 @ 1024x768 both with 4xAA and AF. To keep it short, imo, they looked worse than they do with no AA or AF @ 1280x1024. I don't think this (or any LCD really) is able to run at non-native resolutions with near the sharpness and clarity it does at its native resolution. UT2k4 actually looked ok, there were some strange ovalish shapes that should have been round but overall it still looks playable. Far Cry looked pretty bad, even with AA and AF way up there was a lot of weird jaggy type banding and just a general 'fuzziness'. I don't want to sound too dramatic, but if I was buying this monitor to play at 1024x768, I probably wouldn't. I'd find an LCD that is able to handle lower than native resolutions better, or one with a native res of 1024x768 (or a crt). That or get a card that you feel you can run @ 1280x1024 with all the goodies on.

Just as a reference I play far cry on my machine (p4 3.0, 1gb ram, 9800 pro) @ 1280x1024 with "Medium" AA (the in game menu) and 4x AF with no lag.

Just run at the native resolution; change requires change. If you wish to use an LCD, use it right. Less problems, you will be happy; just lower your AA and AF a bit, you'll be fine.

Ya, so I am at home now and I'm playing Far Cry at 1024x768 again with the AA and AF way up but it definitely looks better @ 1280x1024 with no AA and no AF (and with the 9800 pro I can do 2x aa and 4x af with no lag) so I would definitely recommend trying the native res if you get an LCD.

Thanks for the replies, obviously when I get an tft screen I will be using native res where possible, and that means at the expense of filtering and some detail settings.
However when it's not possible I want to be able to use lower res's, are you guys saying that the VX910 is just average at handling interpolation?
The only reviews I've seen that actually test for interpolation are on tomshardware, and I'm never really sure how impartial thier review are.

Didn't get chance to do screenies as it didn't come with the DVI cable in the box. That should be at home waiting for me when I get back from work.

Using an analog cable I'd have to agree with the above, it does seem a good degree worse in non native resolution so I wouldn't recommend it but I will get those pictures to see if I can convey the difference.

One other thing I noticed is that if you use a dpi other than the windows standard the picture quality is truly awful. I plugged it in yesterday and I was all ready to send it back before I though to change the dpi back to the windows default.

All said I am very sensitive to screen defects and can usually spot shortcomings a mile away but once the dpi issue was resolved I was amazed, the colour vibrancy was exceptionally strong and I could detect no motion blur anywhere, I even put in Bad Boys 2 to try and trip it up but still I couldn't spot a noticable blur and the picture quality, whilst not quite as good as my DLP TV it was close. Very close.

It does seem a little bit too bright in fairness but I'm not putting that down as a confirmed problem for me until I can test the monitor with a DVi cable.

Iratus - in my non-scientific opinion the brightness thing gets much better with a DVI cable. I ran analog for about a week until I got a DVI cable that worked and noticed a big difference in both the color quality and brightness/contrast control.

Zoid - I have three LCDs here, of the three they all seem to display below native resolutions about the same, and that's not great. I wouldn't say the VX910 is any worse or better than the other two. If my digital camera wasn't such a peice of crap I'd definitely take some pics for you. Maybe I will later anyway when the lighting is a little better.

my vx910 should arrive today. sounds like i should have ordered a dvi cable :/

You can get a 6 footer or 10 footer for $13.99 from Newegg. The first one I got was defective, the second works fine.
