Is it just me or do the pixels seem huge??? I open my documents folder, or a photo where theres loads of blue sky and I can see like a mesh over the screen. Is that the anti glare coating?? Coming from a glossy 17" sony i never saw any of this poo! Meh, its going back.

That's called the screen door effect. All LCD's have it. Even the glossy ones.

so glossy = clarity + no meshy shit at the cost of reflections?? (I dont get reflections as I am in pitch darkness in my room (the bat cave  ) )

IMO 22" is too big for that resolution. Just like 19" 4x3's are almost too big for 1280x1024.

Sort of, but I can still see the screen door effect on the glossy panels. Every LCD has the screen door effect, but some are more pronounced than others. The real bennefit to glossy screens vs. the anti-glare screens is that more light gets through the glossy coating than you would ordinarily get through an anti-glare coating on most LCD panels. The end result is brighter and more vivid colors. I've never seen it actually obscure the screen door effect, and in general some monitors hide it better than others. So I don't think it's the glossy covering that kept you from noticing the effect, but rather the design of your older monitor as a whole masks the effect. Get right up on any LCD while it is on and you'll be able to see it. As I said before, not all monitors are created equal in this regard. Some will be worse than others.

The effect is more pronounced on my Viewsonic VX2025wm, and less so on my older VP201s which is a year older at least. My Dell 3007WFP is actually better in this reguard than both of my other monitors. Most people don't seem to know this, but Viewsonic produces mostly low end LCD monitors. Their professional series monitors are the only ones worth a crap, and even then, they are only on par with other higher end solutions and don't really excel in anything other than price.

I can only see the pixels if I put my face 20cm from the screen on my glossy. My sony isnt old, its an sdm-hs75p. Got it 4 months ago. With the 22" I could see the pixels from 1.5 feet away

having your head 18" away isnt ideal for budget monitors, try pushing the screen back a little more. also, your eyes had to be killing you if you sat that close to your crt. sounds like you do a lot of text-viewing. i doubt in games you would notice the pixels.

You'll only notice it looking at the Windows desktop, web browsing, reading and so on. In games you won't notice at all. That is why I still have my Viewsonic VX2025wm. It serves it's purpose fine and was relatively cheap.

also, get the windows add-on for fine-tuning of cleartype. having cleartype tuned specifically for your screen can take away almost all the pixellation in text.

This largely depends on the monitor. I've noticed that many of the higher end LCD's actually look worse to me with Clear Type on.

It is more about pixel size than glossy finish. Big pixels are more obvious. I checked out a glossy NEC 90GX2 in store and it had just as much SDE as other 19" monitors.

Think about it the 20" WS and 22" WS each have the same amount of pixels, so obviously the pixels are going to be fairly larger on the 22".

Just like 17" and 19" each have same amount of pixels. I have a 17" and readily see the pixels at a 2 foot working distance. I can detect the barest hint of them at 2.5 feet and they are completely gone by 3 feet. If I had a 19" it would only make them more visible.

its a tft. sdm-hs75p. I look at photos a fair bit, and have got used to a really crisp images with my 17" x=black sony glossy tft. You'd be surprised, in css, you can see the pixels in the sky, or anything with a surface that isnt heavily textured. It's really a bit of a pain.

Well this wasnt that cheap here, it was 340 pounds. For an extra 40 I can get the 20wgx2. Much better monitor at least from what ive heard/been told recently.

That makes total sense dude, cheers :D I dont really need the extra 2 inches, and would much prefer to not have that niggle.

Thanks everyone for your input
